Mónica Beatriz Cuello

Mónica Cuello, graduate teacher of English from ISP “Pbro. Dr. A. M. Saenz”, Licenciada en Inglés from Universidad Nacional del Litoral, belongs to the team of Literature lecturers at the English Speaking Scholastic Association of the River Plate Centre. She has been a lecturer of Literatura Inglesa II at Universidad Nacional del Litoral and has taught IGCSE and IB literature at secondary schools. At present she teaches Language and Written Expression I and Language and Culture IV at ISP Saenz. She is also a tutor of English Language III and IV and Literatura de los Países de Habla Inglesa I and II at the Universidad Nacional de Lanús.
Teachers preparing students for CIE exams.
- To explore the context of production of the novel.
- To study female characters, namely Jane, Helen Burns, Mrs. Fairfax, Adele, Miss Ingram, Grace Poole and Bertha Mason.
- To focus our attention on their speech, silences, attitudes and behaviour.
- To establish relations with other texts, Rebecca (the novel by Daphne Du Maurier and Hithcock's film), film versions of Jane Eyre and Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea.
- Charlotte Bronte's life.
- Britain in the 19th century: the status of women
- The woman as the angel of the house: does the text embody or subvert this construct?
- The selected female characters and their role in the novel.
- Introduction of texts which can be read / seen to enrich our understanding of the novel.
The coordinator will briefly reconstruct the historical background, eliciting information from the audience. Then the participants will discuss the plot of the novel and the role the selected female characters play within the text. We will see how this society establishes and conditions the roles women may have. We will discuss how they conform to these social conventions or rebel against them.
Then we will read extracts from Rebecca and Wide Sargasso Sea and watch different scenes from film versions of Jane Eyre and Rebecca.
Participants will use different graphic organisers, which can then be used with their students, to explore these characters. They will explore exam-based activities which will sharpen a critical response to the novel.
