- To provide IGCSE literature teachers with useful tools for the analysis of literary texts.
- To provide them with strategies to facilitate students' access to those texts.
- To enhance critical thinking in both teachers and students.
Theoretical background: Neoclassical vs. Romantic attitudes towards society. Rousseau's myth of the "Noble Savage". Postmodernism and the demystification of the Romantic ideal of the Noble Savage.
The story: Setting: the importance of isolation. Plot: analysis of narrative strategies. Characters: presentation techniques and motivation analysis. Themes, motifs and symbols. Use of allegory. Detailed analysis of fragments.
Methodology: Literary analysis and pedagogical considerations on the story through a facilitator-led presentation, debates, pair work and group work activities.
Previous reading of the novel is presupposed.
