- To introduce the basic components of audiovisual texts.
- To explore similarities and differences between film and literature.
- To enable teachers to design tasks in which students can make a critical interpretation of film.
Section 1. Introduction. The visual code, the audio code and the Film Composition Device.
Section 2. Film Genres.
Seaction 3. Film and literature: a conflictive relationship?
- Film as cinematic narrative.
- The visual and audio codes.
- Making a film: the screenplay and the storyboard.
- The film composition device.
- The concept of genre.
- Textual elements of a specific genre. Case study: "Far from Heaven" (2002). The woman's film.
Methodology:
There will be an expository introductory session accompanied by scenes from several films to illustrate the types of shot and sound used. Attention will also be paid to cinematic dialogue.
"Far from Heaven" will be watched (with a guide) and discussed after watching.
