For teachers from 3rd through high school.
Participants will explore hands-on dramatic *strategies and tools to later use them in their classrooms to enable and further develop their students’ literacy and critical thinking skills.
Note: These techniques do not require teachers' or students' previous acting training.
- Introduction to the still image (tableaux). Dramatic strategy or devise done in small groups of 3 to 6 students. The still image illustrates a frozen action that represents a dramatic situation. E.g. saying goodbye to a relative in the airport.
- The still image’s different applications. Curriculum based still image, history, Spanish, English, literacy. Still image to examine extra curriculum based subjects such as social issues, group dynamics, peer pressure, etc.
- The still image and literacy. Members of this workshop will choose a text (short story/ poem/folktale/ fable) and will look at how to explore the meaning the text, its structure, setting, main idea, conflict, and character’s point of view.
- Features that can be added to the still image. The still image can stand alone or be used in conjunction with captions (giving a title to the image), thought tracking (sharing thoughts and feelings about the situation), and bringing it to life/ action.
The methodology is based on TIE (Theatre in Education) and DIE (Drama in Education)
Clark. J., Dobson. W., Goode T. & Neelands. J. (1997) Lessons for the Living. Drama And The Integrated Curriculum, Ontario: Mayfair Cornerstone Limited.
