- To promote the need to develop higher order thinking skills in students.
- To explore ways of enhancing students' capacity for thinking and learning.
- To reflect upon classroom practices that lead to effective cognitive development.
What are thinking skills? Intelligence: definition and components. Different kinds of intelligence. Brain dominance and learning. Information processing.
How thinking skills enhance learning. From lower to higher order thinking skills. Different aspects of teaching thinking: creative thinking, critical thinking, problem solving. A framework for scaffolding students' thinking skills. The problem of skills transfer.
Steps and guidelines to introduce thinking skills in the classroom. Thinking skills across the curriculum: how to use them in maths, language, natural science and social studies.
Thinking skills as a daily tool: classroom activities and lessons. Evaluation of results.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of thinking skills that can be taught and used in different classroom situations. Discussion tasks through workshop activities will give teachers the chance to consider how to apply these skills to their own reality, include them in their lesson plans, try them out and share their experience.
