Poetry engages learners’ emotions, encourages language awareness and provides opportunities for memorisation of new language. It is also a fun way of practising pronunciation and intonation patterns, particularly when it goes back to its oral origins. Let’s explore the potential of poems which leave the page to go on stage or on screen (such as song lyrics and performance poetry) to enrich language development and intercultural awareness in the language and literature class.
- The facilitator will introduce several examples of song lyrics and performance poetry which participants will be invited to discuss in terms of their potential for the classroom.
- Participants will be encouraged to device activities to exploit such texts in class.
