1) To share the joys of reading.
2) To discuss Anthony Burgess's statement: (a good literary work) "must leave in the reader's mind a sort of philosophical residue. A view of life has been indirectly propounded that seems new, even surprising."

June 15, 2014 marks the hundredth year of the publication of Dubliners, the well-known collection of short stories by James Joyce.
This is an invitation to explore the Joycean canon by delving into the first and last stories of the collection, namely "The Sisters" and "The Dead".
There will be two sessions:
Session 1 An introduction to the life and times of James Joyce, with special reference to the early years. An overview of the stories, particularly "The Sisters". Excerpts from letters and work by J.Joyce.
Session 2 An analysis of "The Dead": setting, point of view, characterization and themes.
There will be a toast to celebrate the anniversary.
It is requested that in order to ensure participation the material should be carefully read before the sessions.
