Set in Ireland in 1985, Small Things Like These revolves around the life of Bill Furlong, a successful coal merchant, devoted husband and doting father of five, in the weeks running up to Christmas. Furlong will be faced with a moral dilemma that will force him to confront his own past and make a choice between taking action against blatant injustice committed against some helpless young women or turning a blind eye to this to preserve his own privileges and economic stability. Keegan’s novel offers an insightful exploration of institutionalized hypocrisy and corruption, and of our own capacity for empathy and redemption.
