In Claire Keegan's coming-of-age novella, a small girl is sent to live with foster parents on a farm in rural Ireland in the summer of 1981. The protagonist's journey outwards into the countryside is also a journey inwards, in which she develops a new sense of self and a new awareness of loss and grief. However, she also discovers a kind of love she has not known before at home and creates enduring bonds of affection with the couple that cared for her during that life-changing summer.
