In this session, we will explore the literary worlds of Eudora Welty and Kate Chopin, focusing on their portrayals of the American South. We will examine how each writer captures the complexities of gender, identity, and place, using regional detail not only as backdrop but as a force shaping character and conflict. In particular, we will consider how landscape, memory, and silence function in their narratives, and how each author navigates the tensions between tradition and transformation. Welty’s lyrical prose and psychological subtlety contrast with Chopin’s bold explorations of female autonomy and desire, yet both challenge social conventions and offer profound reflections on the inner lives of women. A selection of short stories (“Clytie” by E. Welty and “The Story of an Hour” by K. Chopin) will be provided in advance for prior reading.
Online Reading Breakfast session. Dialogical and interactive approach in which participants will discuss the texts and the topics introduced as well as analyse the different ways in which artists express their concerns.
