• To explore the themes the novel presents.
• To analyse the characters and consider their role in the development of the story.
• To identify the points of tension in the text.
• To establish relationships with other texts.
This workshop focuses on characterization and the themes of power and identity. To address the issue of identity the facilitator will introduce the concept of the other and consider how this term can be applied to the novel. As a possible intertextual connection, the facilitator will suggest watching parts of episodes of the TV series Lost. This visual text may be used to introduce the novel and to elicit from the students the topics that the novel presents.
- The facilitator will briefly present the theoretical background, eliciting information from the participants. Then she´ll start discussing the novel using several activities which refer to the topics mentioned before.
- Handouts will be provided.
