Julia Hubbard

After a degree in English and Education at York University, Julia did her teacher training at Cambridge University and acted as a teacher-tutor on their PGCE course whilst teaching locally. She has been an English teacher in the state secondary system since 1986. She ran her own department for a number of years as well as delivering in-service training to local schools and librarians on the teaching of English language and literature. Julia is now a Senior Teacher in one of the top 20 state schools in the UK. Her role as Curriculum Co-ordinator involves her in whole school strategy making and delivery. Her specific responsibilities are Information technology and Assessment. She is also a Leading Teacher specialising in English for the County of Surrey. She has published teaching materials and case-studies based on her work since the mid 80s. Last year Julia co-authored an IGCSE Study Guide for John Murray publishers. She is currently writing a text-book for Heinemann. Julia began examining IGCSE First Language English in 1991 and is involved with all aspects of the syllabus, writing examination papers, leading a team of examiners, training teachers of the syllabus overseas, and of course marking lots of papers! Julia tutors the CIE online Professional development Course in First Language English and also moderates the online discussion group. She has also been involved in the development of the British Key Stage 3 Curriculum (for 11-14 year olds) and was part of the Cambridge based team who initially developed the 'SAT' tests. She regularly trains UK based teachers on how to improve their students’ Key Stage Three results and leads a team of over 100 markers specialising in the assessment of Reading.
