- To suggest activities suitable for IGCSE level.
Struggle and loss in the horrors of the siege of the city of Leningrad in 1941. Helen Dunmore observed in an interview for The Observer (Sunday June 10, 2001): "What I wanted to do by writing the novel was to focus on this small group of people and to create a world which is felt and tasted and rooted. It's not an overview of the siege, it's an inner view"
Methodology: Group and pair work.
Previous reading of the novel is presupposed.
