- To cease being afraid of dealing with poetry and to start appreciating the aesthetics and conciseness of poetry through the identification of the literary resources being used and their function.

- To interpret poems of different forms and from different periods and cultures.
- To train students to produce a critical commentary on a previously seen (IGCSE Part 1) and unseen poem (IGCSE Part 3).
- To recognize different ways in which poets achieve their effects through language structure and form.
- To interpret poems of different forms and from different periods and cultures.
- To train students to produce a critical commentary on a previously seen (IGCSE Part 1) and unseen poem (IGCSE Part 3).
Teachers will be introduced to a series of strategies to help them teach figures of speech and other literary devices used in poetry. By means of examples taken from "Songs of Ourselves" Part 4 and other set texts for 2012, 2013 and 2014, teachers will acquire a better understanding of these devices and how they embellish verses. Finally, teachers will be given tools to encourage students to choose poetry for the seen and unseen parts of the IGCSE exam.
This course will be delivered in a workshop mode for participants to enrich their understanding of the texts with contributions from the group. Teachers will be introduced to other poems and songs to help them illustrate and acquaint students with figures of speech and other literary devices.
