- Literacy acquisition: understanding how children best learn to read in order to develop appropriate reading programmes.
- Characteristics of emergent and early readers.
- The importance of oral language as the key to success in reading and writing.
- Defining reading strategies and how best to teach them.
- Choosing suitable reading material according to children's interests and needs.
- Assessment and assessment tools, in particular Running Records.
