Dr. Karen Edge is a Senior Lecturer of Education Leadership at the Institute of Education-London where she is also Director of International Partnerships in the Doctoral School. In 2011, Karen’s IOE-based team began a 3-year ESRC-funded research project entitled: Young Global City Leaders: Building an evidence base in London, New York and Toronto to support the next generation of school leadership innovation. Karen recently completed three long-term international studies investigating the influence of partnerships between UK schools and schools in 19 countries across Africa and Asia funded by DfID (2006-09), British Council (2008-10), PLAN-UK (2007-10). Karen’s research, teaching and consulting explore issues of leadership, educational change, knowledge management, partnership, innovation, organizational improvement and international development. Karen is the Editor of Educational Assessment, Evaluation and Accountability and serves on the editorial board of School Leadership and Management and the Peer Review Panels of the Economic and Social Science Research Council (UK) and the Danish Council of Strategic Research. Karen is an Executive Committee member of UKFIET and the External Examiner at Manchester University.
Prior to joining the IOE, Karen briefly served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Education in Ontario, Canada. She completed her PhD in knowledge management and educational reform at the Ontario Institute of Education/University of Toronto.
Heads, deputy heads, coordinators and teachers interested in exploring the concept of Leadership.
Building on the successful sessions in April 2013, Karen will return to work with ESSARP teachers and leaders to continue discussions about the theory and practice of truly meaningful change in schools. This session will briefly reintroduce the concepts of mindsets, networks and innovation. We will then quickly move on to discuss and design more school and ESSARP- specific discussions of how to build on current professional knowledge and strengths to create even stronger schools and student outcomes. This fast-paced interactive session will be of interest to those participating in previous sessions as well as new participants. Throughout the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences in classrooms and schools and build the knowledge and skills that will support their work to bring about change. The session will end with a brief reflection on what makes a great leader and a few very helpful and timely insights from current thinking on work life balance!
