Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life. (Goodreads)
Each New Classics Revisited session will be self-contained. Thus, teachers can decide on how many they wish to attend.
NO PREVIOUS READING OF MATERIAL IS REQUIRED
They can choose to either read the novels beforehand (copies are available at Kel’s and other bookstores) or attend the sessions in order to familiarize themselves with the authors via excerpts.

The sessions will be organized in terms of workshops for participants to enrich their understanding of the texts with contributions from the group. The latter will discuss the target audience for each text, points of entry, textual interventions and intertextual links which can be established with other verbal or visual texts.
