This training course provides background advice for teachers, heads and coordinators. It
explains the principles behind Synthetic Phonics so that your understanding of the
teaching, and your ability to help a child on how to learn to read and write, is much
greater. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and get the children
read fluently, clearly and with good pronunciation and write with good spelling.

• It takes you step-by-step through a phonics lesson and the key skills of the programme:
learning the letter sounds, letter formation handwriting, blending, identifying the sounds in words and tricky words.
• The English Alphabetic Code.
• The importance of reading decodable texts.
• Practical ideas and activities are shown that can be used in class.
• Strategies for helping the struggling child will also be discussed. A first year timetable is also covered, showing the pace at which Synthetic Phonics should be taught.
• It takes you step-by-step through a phonics lesson and the key skills of the programme:
