John Banville’s “The Cleave Trilogy” comprises three novels that revolve around the life of actor Alexander Cleave and his estranged daughter Cass: Eclipse (2000), Shroud (2002) and Ancient Light (2012). In them, Banville explores the interplay between the actor’s masks and his multiple selves, the invention of the past and the fallible nature of memory. Within these multi-layered novels also lie the philosophy of Friedrich Nietszche, Jaques Derrida’s and Paul de Man’s ideas about deconstruction and Louis Althusser’s Marxism, which makes “The Cleave Trilogy” a complex read, but also a profound examination of the nature of drama and representation, the uniqueness and preciousness of human existence and the possibility of true human connection. The aim of this workshop is to explore Banville’s Shroud in detail as the pivotal text in the trilogy, and establish connections with the other two novels in order to gain insight into Banville’s fictional universe.
