In By Nightfall, Michael Cunningham explores the life of a middle-class, middle-aged married couple, Peter and Rebecca, and how their well-contented existence is disrupted by the arrival of Rebecca’s younger brother, Ethan, known as Mizzy, short for “The Mistake”.
