Ernest Hemingway is one of the most relevant and path breaking writers of the XXth Century. In this session, we are going to read a selection of his most anthologised short stories and discuss his themes within the context of the first and second world wars. His idiosyncratic style was highly imitated. We will concentrate on his theory of the iceberg and the omissions that create a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty. We will focus on his use of language to convey meaning, the role of dialogue to construct a sense of immediacy and the tension between men and women.
In this reading breakfast, we intend:
- To create a reading community of lovers of literature.
- To develop reading strategies to tackle the ambiguous nature of literary texts.
- To learn about Hemingway´s style and his contribution to the new generations of writers.
