Martha Patricia De Cunto

She holds a Master of Arts in Literary Linguistics from the University of Nottingham, UK and is currently doing a PhD in Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. She is also pursuing a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies at UNR. She has been a lecturer in American Literature, Children's Literature, YAL Literature and Introduction to Literary Studies at I.E.S. Lenguas Vivas "Juan Ramón Fernández". She has also taught Creative Writing at ISP “Joaquín V. González”. She has been a teacher of Language and Literature in several schools in Buenos Aires for more than 30 years.
Literature teachers and readers who are interested in deepening their knowledge of metaphor and metaphor analysis. It is specially aimed at people who are interested in literary and linguistic development.

Discuss the concept of ‘metaphor’ from a cognitive perspective.
Compare and contrast cognitive and creative metaphors from examples taken from literature.
Recognize and analyze different kinds of metaphors in literary texts and discuss their functions.
1)Conceptual metaphors: LIFE IS A JOURNEY, ARGUMENT IS WAR, LOVE IS A JOURNEY THEORIES ARE BUILDINGS, IDEAS ARE FOOD, SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE PLANTS
2)Common target and source domains of cognitive metaphors.
3)Designing mappings
4)Orientational metaphors and ideology
The facilitator will present the topics with examples. Participants will be required to work on samples to recognize different kinds of metaphors. They will analyze metaphors and discuss their function in context. They will reflect on how to teach metaphors at secondary level.
