This is basically an introduction to adaptation theory with particular attention paid to the intertextual relation between literature and film. During the year the attendants to the course will be reading part of the research carried out in this field by scholars Robert Stam and Linda Hutcheon Several film adaptations from Shakespeare will be discussed during the first part of the year. In the second term film adaptations from 18th and 19th century British novels will be explored.
The films to be discussed are: "Richard III" directed by R Loncraine, "Romeo and Juliet", directed by Baz Lurhman, "The Merchant of Venice", directed by Michael Radford, "Macbeth", directed by Roman Polanski, "Throne of Blood", directed by Akira Kurosawa, "Pride and Prejudice" directed by Joel Wright, "Bride and Prejudice" directed by Gurinder Chadha and "Wuthering Heights" directed by Suri. B. Krishnamma, MTV version.
The concept of adaptation as semiotic transposition, appropriation, writing back, recreation, translation or betrayal. The roles played by the film crew in the process of transposition. Film language. Point of view. Text and subtext. Body language. The concept of physicality. Context of production and Context of Receptio of film adaptations.
After a theoretical introduction to the cinematic concepts previously introduced, scenes from the films mentioned above will be watched and discussed in the sessions.
