To become aware of possible readings / interpretations of the play in the light of classical and post-modern literary theory.
- Who is the central character in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice: Antonio / Portia? / Shylock?
- Is Shylock, the jew of Venice, the villain or the scapegoat in this (ambiguously) just Venetian society? How has historical development in the western world influenced the interpretation/representation of the play?
Methodology:
Exposition and group work (discussion and comments on the different points of view presented; questions and group discussion tasks on the part of the audience).
