Maureen Fleming

Maureen Fleming is an international educator originally from the United States who has been based in Bogotá, Colombia for many years. Her professional experience includes work as an IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) teacher, examiner, and workshop leader, supporting both student learning and teacher development. Over the years, she has held a range of senior leadership positions, including serving as Head of School and as a member of a Board of Governors, contributing strategically to school governance and long-term institutional growth.

Currently, Maureen serves as School Improvement Lead for the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC), where she supports member schools in strengthening their focus on continuous school improvement and commitment to building a robust safeguarding culture.
This 90-minute presentation explores the vital role of safeguarding and child protection in school improvement. High-performing schools are built on cultures of safety, trust, and wellbeing, where students and adults can thrive. Safeguarding is therefore not simply a compliance requirement, but a core element of effective leadership and continuous improvement.

The session will introduce practical tools, frameworks, and self-review processes that help schools strengthen safeguarding practice and meet high international standards. It will also highlight the value of collaboration and professional networks in sharing expertise and raising standards across schools.

Participants will engage in a sample self-study exercise within the context of their own schools. The presentation will conclude with discussion, feedback, and questions.
