Can Okar

Can Okar holds a Philosophy and Politics BSc, an MA in International Relations from the University of Bristol, and he is currently studying a DPhil in Politics at the University of Oxford. Debating experience: He was the European Universities Debating Champion in 2003 and reached the Semi-Finals of the World Universities Championships in 2004. He debated actively from 2001 to 2004 and has since been a coach and judge. He was on the Debate Squad in 2004 and represented the ESU in a display debate. He was the Chief Adjudicator of the World Universities Debating Championships in 2010 and the Chief Adjudicator of the European Universities Debating Championships in 2007. He has been on Grand Final panels at one Worlds, four Europeans and one Oxford IV.  He has also coached extensively across Europe, in particular in France and Turkey. He has trained a generation of university speakers from Turkey on a regular basis and worked with the Grandes Ecoles.

Eve Hibbert-Keene

Eve Hibbert-Keene holds a BA in History from the University of Bristol and is currently studying at the University of Oxford for an Msc in Latin American Studies. She has taken part in several debate contests obtaining excellent results; ESU Mace 2008, UCD IV 2008, Imperial IV, Bath IV, Glamorgan Open, Nottingham IV, King’s College IV, Winston Cup and Yule Cup, among others. She also participated in the ESU tour in India in 2008. As a coach, she organised and ran coaching sessions for the Bristol Debating Union in 2008. In that same year, she was mentor at the ESUs Debate Academy at Oakham, Deputy Chief Adjudicator at the Imperial IV, and both, mentor and judge, for the ESU Great Shakespeare Debate. She chaired rooms during the European Debating Championships 2008 in Estonia and was chair and judge in the Bristol Debating Union and the Bristol Open in 2007/08. In 2009, Eve mentored students totally new to debating at Horrogate Grammar School.
Along this practical session, presenters will stress the importance of body language in public speaking and provide insight into how to write speeches that can be light and carry a strong sense of humour to keep the interest of an audience going.
