- Explore “The Deep South” in the USA; a highly idiosyncratic cultural region, with its recurrent themes and tropes: the gallant South, the Grotesque, slavery, the plantations, the close-knit community, the Southern Gothic.
- Read, analyse and interpret four paradigmatic short stories written by two main representatives of the Southern Gothic: William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor.
In this reading breakfast, we intend:
- To create a reading community of lovers of literature.
- To develop reading strategies to tackle the ambiguous nature of literary texts.
- To learn about the Southern Gothic.
- Read, analyse and interpret four paradigmatic short stories written by two main representatives of the Southern Gothic: William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor.

Workshop. Dialogical and interactive approach in which participants will discuss the texts and the topics introduced as well as analyse and interpret the different ways in which artists portray the “Deep South”.
