Upper primary and lower secondary school ESL teachers
- To reinforce and extend students’ reading comprehension skills and habits in the mixed- ability class.
- To propose multisensory techniques together with literary activities that will spark the interest of even the most reluctant reader.
- To transfer the reading strategies used in the Literature class to all sorts of EFL lessons.
- To help struggling readers construct meaning when faced with literary or non-literary texts, while motivating and challenging avid ones, through a toolkit of engaging activities.
- To learn how to avoid using insipid and ineffective in-class reading comprehension activities that only discourage students from reading.
We'll be sharing how to:
- use literacy strategies through the Orton Gillingham approach to enhance struggling readers' performance when analysing literary and non-literary texts in the ESL class.
- help students develop their reading skills and ignite their creative spark by exposing them to various compelling novels by Michael Morpurgo.

NO PREVIOUS READING OF MATERIAL IS REQUIRED
Firstly, we will examine how our brain works when reading in a foreign language. Once having done so, we will suggest teaching strategies for all students to enjoy and benefit from the use of literary texts by Michael Morpurgo in the EFL class. We’ll be analysing extracts from The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom and An Elephant in the Garden. It won’t be necessary to have read these novels. We intend to show how students profit from the teaching of reading strategies used in the literature class and can transfer these skills to all sorts of texts.
