Martha Patricia De Cunto

She holds a Master of Arts in Literary Linguistics from the University of Nottingham, UK and is currently doing a PhD in Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. She is also pursuing a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies at UNR. She has been a lecturer in American Literature, Children's Literature, YAL Literature and Introduction to Literary Studies at I.E.S. Lenguas Vivas "Juan Ramón Fernández". She has also taught Creative Writing at ISP “Joaquín V. González”. She has been a teacher of Language and Literature in several schools in Buenos Aires for more than 30 years.

Queer Gender by Maia Kobabe (2019) is a comic memoir about a girl who goes through different gender stages in “Eir”coming of age (Spivak 1990). The comic memoir questions the normative structures of sex, gender and sexuality imposed on this girl in the rural and suburban areas of the US.

The session will trace the complex search for the protagonist’s gender and sexual identity. The participants will gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of queer and non-binary gender identity.

The session will introduce different non-binary gender pronouns used in the graphic novel. It will highlight the importance of using them for transgender and gender non-conforming people so that we teachers and the public in general avoid misgendering people through language.

The facilitator will discuss the most important themes and will ask the participants to answer questions on the different stages of the protagonist’s search for gender identity.

Participants will be required to work on extracts in break-up rooms to explore moments of tension in the life of the protagonist and to identify textual and visual elements used to produce a certain effect on the reader.
