• To identify the issues presented in the novel and the narrative strategies used to convey them
• To explore the relevance of such issues in an Argentine context
• To speculate on the reasons for the novel’s success and on its potential for cultural mediation
• To reflect on language change in the light of new views on gender identity and race

Through a selection of specific extracts, we will discuss the novel’s structure, central themes (such as race, age and gender), characterization and the construction of distinct voices in this highly polyphonic novel. We will also concentrate on language use (punctuation, layout, humour, poetic prose) and whether the presentation of the particular (a range of black British lives) can, though cultural mediation, lead to transcultural understanding.
Guided by the facilitator, participants will be encouraged to respond to the text and reflect on the issues listed in the objectives and any other observations arising from the discussion.
