Instagram poets are attracting millions of followers through their inspiring, relatable and very accessible minimalist posts. If so, why not bring these poets into our class, more so when most write short texts in simple, straightforward English, sometimes accompanied by engaging illustrations?
The workshop will focus on three young, culturally diverse, female Instapoets, not because there aren’t as many male voices worth examining, but because the female gaze has almost been absent in the white, male poetic tradition. Punjabi-Canadian Rupi Kaur, 26, explores universal issues such as identity, love, sexual abuse and women’s empowerment. Somali-British Warsan Shire, 30, writes very powerfully about immigrant experience, sex and infidelity, among many other subjects. And West African- British Yrsa Daley-Ward, also 30, concentrates on family, loss, displacement and mental health. But their poetry isn´t solely for young, female readers: the three look into the issues of self-esteem, gender equality and human empowerment which cater to a wider reading public.
