Claire Keegan's “So Late in the Day” is a story told through the eyes of a young man named Cathal, who is musing upon his recent breakup with Sabine. At first, readers are led to sympathize with Cathal as he laments the end of the affair. However, as the story unfolds, Cathal begins to emerge as a disturbed and confused individual, and we get a glimpse of the reasons why his relationship with Sabine went awry.
