British-Trinidadian poet Roger Robinson won the 2019 T.S.Eliot prize for poetry and has just won the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje prize for his collection A Portable Paradise. How can poetry awards empower the voice of the BAME community in the UK? Can we carry a paradise with us in these times of uncertainty? How can poetry encourage the practice of empathy?
The facilitator will present background information about the author and his context of production. Participants will be encouraged to respond to the texts and reflect on the relationship between poetry and music, performance and reality.
The group will analyse Robinson’s style and its effect on the reader.
